The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
