No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
