Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
